There is no obligation to travel on one ticket, the obligation is to remain airside. "confirmed onward ticket for a flight to a third country."
No checked luggage avoids need to exit the airside area.
Recommendation would be travel EI throughout as EI in LHR can issue the boarding cards for both flights. In theory they could even check luggage through, but don't plan on that. This avoids the risk of the system says no as BA in LHR won't be able to see a EI booking on there systems
Ideally a single ticket is recommended if a delay/cancellation etc occurs then the airline is responsible for the situation which follows.
Last time I did this type of trip [LHR-DUB separate ticket DUB-SFO] a good few years ago the Aer Lingus staff at LHR were helpful and issued both boarding passes.
Not that I had a visa issue for Ireland, but I find having both boarding cards in paper form helps in these types of situations.
So I would definitely agree that flying Aer Lingus LHR-DUB [and getting hold of your onward boarding pass in LHR] would give you an extra level of assurance.
