I totally understand. I still get decent value for very short haul Delta flights which they left alone. Case in point I regularly book positioning flights for me and to get my son to and from college. Cash price is generally $220-300 for 7500 VS points on Delta. I have also gotten good value booking AF/KLM via VS.
