The above may be how the system is intended, but not how it works in practice. I used a companion cert in the last week and was able to entirely pay my portion with an eCredit. I was also offered to search for one in my companion’s name but opted to use a non-DL Amex to pay those taxes and fees.
Any Amex in anyone’s name works. No gift card. No Visa, MCard or Discover.
