Obviously we'll have to pick up our checked bags in IAD and clear immigration and customs. Will we be able to recheck them immediately, or would we have to take them with us to the hotel overnight and recheck them in the morning?
I've never done this thru IAD, but used to do it through SEA. There's a "connecting bag" station there (have a clear recollection of the DL one), right after you clear customs and immigration. IIRC (been a few years), the recheck stations were airline specific, or for some airlines there wasn't one. If you have a bag check tag showing your full routing, you just throw your bag on, no worries. If you're not particularly risk averse, you could throw it on anyway, your airline should be able to figure out your bag's itinerary.

Someone more familiar with IAD should be able to confirm if UA has a similar setup at IAD.
