Agree I love the group desk. That said I avoid group bookings like the plague as they are quite difficult to manage. We had a cancelled trip and it was a PITA to split off the individual ticket credit. Also had to call to add FF #s, elite seating etc

Of course you can wait until T-24 for your free seats to be assigned. But if the flight is oversold you may not be happy if part of the group is bumped. So best to call the group desk asap to see if they can sort it
