This is 100% on AS, and I concur they should comp OP for hotel and incidentals per their CS plan, just as they would if the forced overnight was due to mx.

This is not helpful at all.
It is not at all unreasonable to expect that the counter check-in stations will be able to tag your bags if you arrive prior to the bag check cut-off.
Moreover, when checking bags for a domestic flight, I typically arrive at the airport right around T-60; I'm pretty sure this is common for those of us who travel frequently and have Pre/Clear.
