I have not done this for a few months and I have only booked Y award seats through UA. Usually you can pick the seat on the UA side. I also have managed to pick seats on the EVA side with no problem. They block out a lot of seats in the front of the Y cabin for airport assignment and their own elites.

Maybe something has changed?
