I will say the thing I always say. The solution to the problem is simple.
The reason why people value preboarding is because they need to store their mammoth rollers ahead of other mammoths. Put reasonable limit on free carry-on bags (such as there will be space for everyone) and charge for anything larger, being conscious about total space. Problem solved!
They did do that with the baggage sizers, and the enforcement of bag size delayed the boarding process.
