Spirit and Jet Blue were different. Spirit is a discount airline and Jet Blue is a full service airline. In this case the DoJ saw it as the elimination of a discount carrier.
I get that it's not the DOJ's responsibility to make sure JetBlue and Spirit don't go into bankruptcy and whatever. But it seems a little short sighted of the DOJ to block it because they might lose one discount carrier, when in reality, we will probably lose both JetBlue and Spirit at this rate and be out of two carriers instead.
I like JetBlue a lot, but with these recents route cuts and suspensions, they don't seem to have a lot of life left in them anymore. They've had a really rough year, NEA w/ AA dissolved, Spirit merger failed, tons of cuts, it's looking rough.
