Whether you think it's worth $100/$40 more depends on your itinerary. If you are heading up to the mountain or Colorado Springs anyway, you might as well start heading out. Last time we arrived really late at DEN and we collected the car at around 11pm (waited 1h 15m for our checked bags). Got out of the lot at around 12am, kids passed out in the car and it was a hassle to wake them up and got them to walk up to the hotel. Fortunately our flight from IAD to DEN didn't have the state of the art IFE so UA's direct TV bored the hell out of them so they got a nap on that flight.
I was suffered from altitude sickness - so one night in DEN didn't help (our next stop was COS and then up to Breckenridge). I was sick from day 2 and was on ibrupofen until I was about to go home. I don't know that extra night in Denver helped and I won't be going to Colorado alone.
That is exactly our itinerary! We don't like to drive at night so will spend the first night at DEN, next 3 at COS, next 2 Breck then another visiting friends who live on a mountain. I don't recall ever getting altitude sickness (recently was in Santa Fe/Taos, not sure how high they are) but we're also hoping the first night at DEN will be a good baseline. Car rental went down again, now only $25 more.
