I stayed in the Novotel Centro Historico earlier this year and thought it was adequate. Earned and burned points with/for the stay.
Taxi from the airport brought me right in front of the door and waited until the receptionist had it unlocked.
I'm not sure about how safe the area actually is and no experience with or opinion on breakfast offerings.

I only speak enough Spanish to tell people I don't speak Spanish and prefer English, if possible and gor along fine with the night receptionist. Also between a late night/very early morning arrival and a connecting flight.
