The issue around points bookings, is that a few people early on were erroneously confirmed on to BA. Having spoken yesterday to a contact at VS, it was noticed that a few had gone through and they swiftly stopped any more going through ticketing, whilst they put a points solution in place. Good news for a handful of people who got lucky. For everyone else, I can only hope they resolve this properly, but normally it will take a week to 10 days for airlines to get a solution in place from experience. They will most likely be trying to get SkyTeam partners to make reward tickets available for VS to transfer these over to. It isn't a quick or easy task, so there is a legitimate reason it takes a bit more time.

As I'd said early on in this thread, airlines will try to get people to take refunds, they will also normally treat points booking separately. The main thing is that they find a solution for points bookings, rather than just treating them as refund only and not fulfilling their obligations. The fact that they have talked about working on a solution for points bookings is encouraging, as airlines including VS have tried to flat out reject this in the past. When that happens, it can and does become a protracted battle of wills to get things sorted and for passengers to have receive their rightful alternatives.

It is frustrating and I understand that people want to get things sorted as quickly as possible to have certainty for future travel plans. So far, VS appear to be trying to come up with solutions for all ticket holders across cash and points fares, which is better than sometimes happens.

I definitely could argue that much of this should have been sorted and in place prior to announcing the cancellation, but part of the game the airlines play is to refund and remove as much of their liability before they work out what is needed. Hopefully they manage to put things in place that works for the vast majority of people.
Thanks for the information regarding points bookings - your VS contact has provided useful context. From my perspective, I am searching for a resolution from Virgin that reinstates my flight (albeit with another carrier) in line with EC261 Regulations so that my plans in Shanghai (and flight connection onward to Tokyo via an Avios booking) are secure. At least I have the advantage of time as my booked flight with Virgin is/was March 2025.
