If you get a decent rate (at any hotel) and breakfast is not included, take the good rate. Instead of paying for a mediocre bread and coffee at the hotel, walk across the street to a bar (there's one across the street from every hotel in Paris), and have a coffee (or cafe creme) and a croissant. You'll pay 1/4 the price of a hotel breakfast, the quality will be twice as good, and you'll have a view of Paris passing by (instead of a bunch of other dull hotel guests).
