Just checked out of a quick two-night stay, overwhelmingly had a great time even as travelers without kids

Service:
  • Service was routinely standout. Front desk was extremely friendly and eager to help, and incredibly fast to respond to text questions. We had a shower clog issue early in the morning, and they had a response within 60 seconds, a mechanic in the room within 15 minutes, and a fix within 30 of initial contact. That was super impressive.
Rooms/property:
  • Rooms are old and not the fanciest, but well maintained and clean - housekeeping was reliable and through during out stay.
  • If you have an oceanview room below the 10th floor, you will likely get a lot of pool/movie night etc. noise. We didn't mind it, but others may.
  • The vibe is definitely young family oriented, and was correspondingly packed on a summer weekend/cleared out somewhat on Monday. I wouldn't let that dissuade others from staying. The location is excellent to beaches, La Jolla, Torrey Pines etc.
F&B:
  • As others have reported, Red Marlin breakfast is not great - the buffet is pretty mediocre and while you can order one cooked-to-order item off the menu, it's a little stingy. Avocado toast was a waste, with barely any avocado on it, and the omelets were very small and oddly strict about a 3-ingredient cap.

Status/Fees:
  • For globalists: Breakfast, parking, late checkout, upgrades all without an issue - there were no suites available (hotel was sold out entirely Saturday night), but they upgraded us to a ocean view and apologized about the lack of suite availability
  • They comped our mimosas at breakfast. Not sure if this is the norm or just goodwill, but you may want to try your luck (:
  • Resort fee inclusions are given to globalists without any hassle - they range from the usual absurd inclusions (pool access, ping pong, in-room movie at 7pm) to some genuinely ok perks (kayak/paddleboard rental for up to 4 people, unlimited free kids drinks at a poolside bar that I was somewhat jealous of). I'd be annoyed if I was paying it, but it's somewhat less egregious than some of the other fee packages I've seen.
