The Hotel 1280 Krone is a tactile combination of wood, stone, steel and glass and one of our nicer finds on the trip. We stayed here two nights, bookending the time in Grindelwald.

First, a safe arrival drink with a few nibbles that were at least partial compensation for the hotel booking out the bar and restaurant for the day for a wedding. The bites were very nice.

The hotel opened in 2023 and involved renovation of a very old building that had at various points been residential and commercial. Portions of the building date back to 1280, hence the name. To access some of the rooms, a new barn structure was added behind the hotel. It includes an elevator and a series of walk ways over to hallways on each floor. The barn is open air and has each level kitted out a bit with furniture.

Our room included a king size bed, flat screen TV, some sort of electronic fireplace (not photographed) and with the bathroom up a fairly steep set of stairs. Counterbalances and pulleys are used to hold open shutters for each window. I don't believe the rooms are air-conditioned.

The basement bar is accessed through a black, perforated metal stairway. There was a modern bar and two rooms connected by a shiny tunnel. I would have happily stayed here for a few more nights.

Breakfast in the main dining area of the hotel was great.
