Agreed. I don't think it's worth it to actively chase status. My situation is similar to OP's: for years, it was just me and the wife, and I found that status was something that held some value for us. We even decided on the destinations based on the availability of Accor, as OP did.
Then we started travelling with a newborn, that turned into a baby and is now a small child. That changed many aspects of the process of choosing a hotel (including the financial factor). We now have some mandatory requirements that we simply did not care about before. It would be very inconvenient to be chained to a particular, er, chain.
