Maybe it's an exception to the overnight rule if you take the first flight out to the destination, assuming all under one PNR?
More likely the overnight rule is disregarded when the overnight connection is less than some time value (perhaps 8 hours?). First flight gambit did not work for us on YVR-LAX-overnight-LAX-back East. We altered our LAX -East to take the first flight ex LAX the next morning in an attempt to bring our connection time under the purported 12 hour limit, and still got the first leg only bag tags. Gave up and went ex SEA next day instead. Used the rest of the day to see Artist's point on Mount Baker. This made the UA BS and even suffering through the IT meltdown the next day worthwhile.
