And they're lying. What surprised me the most yesterday wasn't that my flight was again cancelled, it's that when I went back to talk to my siblings about our tight connection on AA, there were 18 seats available between Row 2 and 18. I fully expected the plane to be packed since all but a few DL flights to any hubs were cancelled for 2 days already.
After escalating to a supervisor then further escalating to ticketing support, I eventually got them to book me on another airline. Took an hour on hold then an additional 57 minutes from the time the first rep answered. I plan to still file a complaint with DOT because of the initial refusals of the airline to honor the Customer Commitment, but overall I ended up faring pretty well. Hoping others are able to successfully press for what they're entitled to.
