I just completed a one-week stay here and thought it was great. The location is a bit removed from the core center of the city and the living area of my Andaz Suite was a bit small, but I loved the breakfast, slept well, and really found no faults.
Booking and Check-in: I paid around €110/nt for my one week stay which I thought was a great deal. I booked a second room for my mother-in-law for 5 nights and that was around €130/nt. The PH was around 5 times the price which was not in my budget, especially not for two rooms.
I applied a TSU without trouble and replied to the pre-arrival e-mail asking if they could block a connecting room for my mother-in-law even though she would arrive 2 days after us. This was handled without issue and they gave me the key to her room the morning she was due in.
The Wine Hour is discontinued however the lobby does still have coffee and water all day, and occasionally cookies (very tasty) showed up as well.
Andaz Suite: This was a proper suite with a door between the living room and the bedroom. A few quirks:
- The bathroom is split in half with the toilet separated from the shower/tub room. The sliding bathroom door could only close one of the bathroom sections at a time
- The connecting door to my mother-in-law’s room was through the shower/tub room, which is an unusual setup. On the plus side, this setup really cut down on any bothersome noise transmission while sleeping
- The living room is a bit small - it felt around half the size of a typical suite living room. However, it had a proper desk and two comfy chairs
We were looking right at the train station and tracks, however I didn’t find the train noise bothersome at all.. it’s barely noticeable.
We received a small welcome amenity of 4 macarons. My Mother in Law received a decorate your own cookie amenity (perhaps she got a more child-focused amenity as we mentioned our son would be staying in that room).
The toiletries smelled like anise to me and I didn’t really care for them, but others may like them.
The bed was very comfortable and we slept great. We’ve spent the past month in Hyatt hotels in Germany and Austria and they’ve all had thinner pillows than I’d like, the Andaz does too but I still slept fine.
It was hot in Vienna (around 90) and the air con performed very well.
Breakfast: I loved the breakfast as it had tons of veggie options and lots of Mediterranean dishes like hummus, roasted eggplant, a chickpea salad, wheat salad, etc. (the exact salads rotated a bit across the week). I ordered the avocado toast once and the truffled scrambled eggs once and they were good; my son had the waffle one day at the recommendation of the waiter and it was delicious but extremely sweet. Overall I found the food excellent and looked forward to breakfast each day. The staff can get a bit overwhelmed and one day my wife’s egg order didn’t appear (although mine did) and sometimes it did take a while for the coffee to come. Still, they were all friendly.
Breakfast charges were removed for all of us Including my mother in law.
Location: It’s around a 5 minute walk to the S-Bahn to Mitte, or the tram to the historic core. I didn’t use the U-Bahn as much but that’s also an option. It’s only around a 30 minute walk into the historic core. The PH definitely has a more central location but the location of this hotel didn’t bother me at all. Plus, I arrived and departed by OBB and it was great to be a 5 minute walk away. The hotel even shows real-time departure info in the elevators.
For Kids: There is an excellent playground on the other side of the train tracks; turn right out the main front door, then the next right to cross under the train tracks. After you’re under the tracks, look on the left for a park. The highlight is a huge “Ninja Course” (as my son would call it; not sure that the technical name is) which was good for at least an hour of running around each day. Look for Helmut Zilk Park.
In conclusion I would absolutely stay here again. I walked by the PH one night and it looked great, but the Andaz was a smoking deal in my book and a very nice hard product.
