I don't think the use of a real-life situation that will have caused a great deal of fear to the individual concerned and a large knock-on effect to an airline is an unusual training example in particularly aviation.

The entire industry, most notably in terms of security, regularly uses actual examples to highlight issues and to make sure they don't get repeated. If you'd ever been on a DfT-approved course on aviation security you'd recognise that.
