In rare cases where they don't expect to sell any more seats someone at EC might be able to open a seat through inventory management, but the chance of opening award seats on this well filled route are pretty slim. That is also the way it works on AA. You can always ask a reservation agent to check with inventory management to see if an available seat can be released for award travel. As an AA platinum, I've had luck with this a few times; I don't know how well it would work with lesser status.
