Going from KUL to LAX through TPE, they made everybody on the completely full 747 deplane with all of our carryons in order to go through a (redundant) security screening as well as physical check against the pax list before reboarding. I don't know about European airports, so YMMV.
On the outbound from LAX to KUL, we had to deplane, but were allowed to leave our carryons onboard.
