Radio silence is never better, in pretty much any situation. I am not saying the crew needs to provide a detailed update, but a quick announcement "due to severe weather, we are diverting to xxx." takes a few seconds. Connections are literally a second thought for people with common sense, but after circling for the time it has, and running near the threshold on fuel, I think most passengers would appreciate the notification of the aircraft would be coming down at an airport rather than somewhere else...
