Unsure if this belongs here but I just arrived at SFO and the bag drop after customs requires schlepping the checked luggage to Terminal 3, Door 11 where is sits with various time bands.
Then it is a walk back to the International terminal since i was connecting from a Polaris flight.
I started avoiding LAX for arrivals because of the need to get from TBIT to Terminal 7 with my luggage since more often than not there was no United agent to recheck the luggage. Now admittedly TBIT to Terminal 7 is a longer walk than my SFO walk this morning but just bizarre.
To be clear there were United luggage handlers after the exit rechecking the luggage but only for the "early flights". I had a 3 hour connection so this did not meet the requirements for an "early flight".
Same thing happened to me in June.
Bag handlers with scanners only took luggage with short connections. Everyone else direct to go to Door 11 where there was a mountain of unsorted luggage. I did not feel comfortable adding mine to the pile. Fortunately, I have the option to walk down to GS reception and drop it off there. The GS agents were surprised and guessed that a recent pipe break which had damaged baggage handling equipment was the reason.
