AA's terms include domestic partner, so you likely will be covered.
I don't know the answer to your question on the refund after - I would call AA and see if you can get this sorted out with them. Cite the linked policy. If you dont get any luck, call back and try again at least once. Find out what the fee is while doing so as well.
Worst case, cancel the ticket, see what you get and submit something to AA Customer Relations with details. They should be able to help you.
