For those of y'all who've stayed at both Thompson Savannah and Perry Lane (Luxury Collection, Marriott), which one would you recommend (I'd be paying cash rate either Prive or STARS)? My sister stayed at the Thompson recently and really liked it - plus I'm a general Thompson fanboy. Additionally, I don't mind that the Thompson is a little bit away from the main attractions. However, I'm seeing rave reviews about Perry Lane, in general...

From what I can gather from recent posts regarding benefits, it seems like elite recognition (Platinum here) at Perry Lane leaves more to be desired... and breakfast at the Thompson seems to be a little more robust? Destination fee would be waived at the Thompson as a Globalist.

Lastly, would renting a car be necessary? Heard taxis are cheap and plentiful, so getting around is not too bad, but it can add up quickly. And, I'd be visiting during the winter, if that influences anything.
Echoing some of the other comments but my wife and I had a stay at the Perry Lane last year and really enjoyed it. As mentioned by another user, we used the house car a few times to take us to/from dinner reservations. Found it a little easier when to utilize when leaving the hotel vs having the car pick you up. I think we took Uber a couple times as well. With that said, we live not too far from Savannah so we drove in but never really felt the need to get our car after we had it valeted. The Perry Lane is pretty well situated and we found we could walk basically anywhere we want. I find Savannah to be a walkable city so I would not think a rental car would be needed unless you wanted to venture out of the city. Additionally, while I haven't stayed at the Thompson, I prefer not to stay down at the Riverfront as that is not my favorite area of town due to how tourist centric it is. Lastly, we found the staff and accommodations at the Perry to be great. My wife was pregnant at the time of our visit but I took full advantage of the free sparking wine in the lobby throughout the day. Additionally, at the cocktail bar The Weyward hotel guests get a free cocktail everyday at 5pm. Also took advantage of that lol and the bartenders were more than willing to make a special mocktail for my wife. Vouchers for breakfast at hotel restaurant were given but other than that no significant elite recognition as you mentioned. I also was unable to secure an upgrade at check-in but that was not a big deal as we were happy with our room. Only other slight ding is that while the views from the rooftop bar are great, it can get kind of crowded since its open to the public and a popular spot. The pool area on the roof though is only for guests and very nice so we often found ourselves just hanging out in that area.
