A friend and family were on the BA369 MRS-LHR last night which diverted to LYS due to engine problems. They were basically left to their own devices with no info from BA. They managed to sort a hotel out thanks to the airport staff, but rather than wait for an update or rebooking or whatever, they’ve jumped on a train back to the UK. I believe that the aircraft is still AOG and will be coming back tonight according to FR24.

Where do they stand with compensation, and claiming back expenses?
So it seems good for EC261 if it was an engine problem. Hotel won't be an issue, and usually BA is OK to pay for replacement train services. However it is critical they do not ask for a refund on their ticket, and those who tend to be quick of the mark to rebook tend to be equally quick to apply for refunds. Hopefully not in this case. Just upload the receipts into the Complaints portal and add a one line of text to say train was self booked to get back to the UK.
