Zooming out even further, the pilots’ job is to focus on flying the plane. They should not be taking time mid-flight to interview those involved and those nearby. Also they may well not have the appropriate skill sets. All they can realistically do, assuming that all is peaceful, is to radio ahead. The issue should be owned not by pilots but by UA ground staff.
