For DEN origination your 24 hour check in period opens 2 hours before everyone originating in California. That gives you the edge in buying an A-15 upgrade. Buy WGA and use the credit card upgrades westbound.
Eastbound you have no advantage so be right on the dot at T-24 to buy the upgrade.

Set up a google flights alert for both directions. When the cash price drops just refare down using Change Flight.
