Personally, I try to carry the critical stuff in interior pockets rather than a purse - one reason I prefer not to travel in summer, when wearing a rain jacket with interior zipper pockets really looks odd. But in reality, thieves are a risk no matter when or where you travel. The trick is trying to travel in a way that leaves you less exposed to risk if you are targeted - which is why my friend is flashing back to traveller's checks.
That's a bit of a problem with a lot of female clothing... lack of pockets! My favorite warm weather pants (I have them in 3/4 colors) have no pockets at all so I have to carry everything in my handbag, a very inconspicuous one when travelling abroad.

I agree with leaving the bulk of the money/cards in the place you stay and minimizing risks, as there is no "guarantee" about pickpocketing. I have to say, however, that stealing a bag while on a scooter is not exactly pickpocketing...

Also, in case like this one, travellers cheques do not minimize the risk of being targeted since thieves can't see one handbag's content.

PS
I thought travellers cheques were only a thing of the past and didn't exist anymore
