Upgraded Ticket Stopovers Not Allowed but AA Booked the Ticket with Stopovers!

Hi all,

I have a problem with AA upgrades. I guess people are going to blame me here and say it is my fault, but I don't think it is entirely my fault.

I booked business class tickets from TPE-LAX going through KUL and DOH. I have a 12 hour layover in KUL which they said I can leave the airport, so I got a hotel for the night.

While I was on the phone with AA to book this I mentioned that I wanted a couple of days in DOH to see the city and was giving them dates there were a few days apart. Eventually we could not find the right match with days so I said I will play around with it and see if I can find a match that more matches my schedule as to not waste more of their time, so I booked it online myself with two nights in Doha. The system allowed it.

I realized the other day a couple of problems, one is that my luggage may not be let out, but I thought usually airports won't let you keep it inside for more than 24 hours so most likely in TPE they would ask me to pick it up in DOH anyway. But then I thought I better check if AA allows stopovers... Well, I was dumbfounded, they do not.... But the tickets were booked last year for later this year. I paid over 120,000 miles, and now the price to change it is over 300,000 miles, I don't have that many miles and would not pay that anyway. I called AA and they wouldn't do anything, I told them that it is partially their fault as I was on the phone with the staff asking about all of this and they didn't catch it. If stopovers are not allowed why would they allow me to book this in the first place? Who wants to spend 2 nights at an airport?

I have contacted customer service through AA websites on advice from the AA phone staff. What a joke. I sent two emails to AA customer service over 4 days. Both emails came back the exact same, they are copy and pasted form letters, there is no customer service. I had asked AA to try to help me deal with this problem, but I am guessing there is no way. I probably will have to cancel the reward nights and book a ticket and pay for it. Which stinks also because I had to book a one way ticket back from the US to TPE. Which now makes the total fare much more expensive than if I had just booked a round trip ticket to begin with. I am quite disappointed in AA. At this moment I am not sure what else to do. Suggestions?
