To me learning from the above case is that once you told them cancel my reservation, I would have to have a paper proof that the reservation was canceled.
But... knowing Hertz... even paper proof does not protect you from cases like this.
I would still reach out if you need to. I guess for me it was such they could easily verify my ID if they had to view camera footage. DFW is somewhat interesting in that the airport public safety department is its own independent sworn agency so it’s more like dealing with a small town.
And the guy at the Gold desk when I said to cancel said he couldn’t do anything until the reservation was fixed by the exit gate (I think he was just lazy) because in my case I had scanned the car and was walking around when the door locked and someone walked over. In the future first thing I do is reach in and grab the keys.
