I know! None of it makes sense. Incidentally, if what they
meant was that you had to fly four segments (XXX-LHR-YYY, then YYY-LHR-XXX), they should have just said that. It seems they now have ambiguous terms + untrained staff, so it is luck of the draw who responds to your inquiry, whether they know what they're talking about, and whether you get the correct answer to your question.
I'm considering simply writing a new email as if this one didn't exist, and seeing if I get a different/better reply.
