I had the exact same experience as OP: under manage my booking it said carry-on bag has to go in the hold for my BA Avios redemption from BOJ to DUB.

I just got my boarding pass and it seems to have the requisite "carry on" notation, I hope it means carry it on onboard, not in the hold (it's my son's school backpack stuffed too full to be a bona fide personal item that I commandeered for a week-long trip).
