I have booked a flight (DUB-IAD) for November. Business on the way there and back in economy. I now see that AL have the option to upgrade with cash straight after booking along with bidding for an upgrade. Which of these options do you guys think is best? Or should I try upgrade with Avios?
Love reading the forums on here, got some good advice so far! 😀
Well if the straight cash upgrade is in the region of 500-600 then this is a no brainer in terms of the bidding alternative as the bidding cost will be about this anyway plus you will get extra avios and tier credits with a straight cash upgrade with immediate confirmation.
Bidding versus an avios upgrade; bidding will likely have you higher up the list to grab any available seats close to departure (check if any open avios seats in J available now though as if there is you could potentially be awarded the avios upgrade very quickly) but with a cash cost (and of course no guarantee) . Avios option is handy if you are not too bothered about getting the upgrade versus travelling in Y but happy to jump to J for the avios cost if availability opens up. Keep in mind IAD-DUB is not a very long flight so the 'value' of the upgrade in terms of time in the air is less.
On a small note if you will be posting more, Aer Lingus is EI not AL
