Diversion Airports in Newfoundland, Northern Quebec and Nunavut are used to this and have SOPs, depending on the length of a delay/recovery. These are remote places though so not many resources for housing people.
Not sure the status of the rescue flight but often (example a recent AF flight) they cancelled one of their 3 daily YUL-CDG flights to pick up the passengers. Its easier to reroute people in a major city than find another plane from the UK and fly to YYR. So perhaps one on the JFK flights or other could do the legwork.
