I'm not big on Balinese style interiors - I'd prefer either modern or traditional Japanese (that's well maintained), and Ginyu is neither.

Service is a bit impersonal. Upon pulling up to the front of the property, I had no idea where to park, and there is no person waiting at the entrance. Also - when you check in, you're asked to wait in the seating area (enjoying the wonderful views) but then you're called to the front desk counter where you take care of the check-in formalities. Very hotel-like.

The onsen is recirculated (rather than continually being fed straight from the source.)

Room layouts are highly variable (even of the same room types); during one of our stays, the Onsen bath on our room deck had a high-enough barrier at the edge that we couldn't see the scenery while taking a soak. Other rooms are much better arranged for great views.

Finally - the food is hit and miss. Our grilled Tachiuo (Cutlass Fish) was salty and cold. Some other uneven servings, too.

It could also use a refresh.

Ginyu seems to be resting on its laurels. Its claim to fame, nowadays, has to do with the insane difficulty in securing a reservation. I wish the quality of the stay lived up to its reputation, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

It's still nice, but for the prices they command I'd expect a bit more from Ginyu.
Thanks for this review - I was actually thinking of booking Tsuki Type room (Japanese style) on the 1st floor as they had both an open bath and an indoor bath with a very generous room size (100 sqm): https://www.hakoneginyu.co.jp/en/guestroom_tsuki.html

However, at ¥117,700 per night for two, one needs to start thinking whether it is good value?

What alternatives would you suggest for a couple? We will be there by the end of January.

We value good views, good food whether it is kaiseki or teppanyaki (my preferred option albeit my SO likes kaiseki more) and private bath (open/outdoor) preferable.

I kind of like a traditional style ryokan however this more modern style from Gora Karaku also got my attention: https://www.gora-karaku.jp/en/ but I don't like the fact that it seems to be much bigger at 70+ units, and that the rooms are basically identical, only changing the east wing (my prefer option for mountain views) versus west wing.

We will be in Tokyo so thought of Hakone as day trip however would you recommend other areas to explore for onsen, ryokan and good food experience?

Many thanks!
