I agree that a two-night single reservation with one cash night and one points/certificate night using the Cash + Points option on Marriott.com is the right answer.

The downside of Cash + Points is that the cash night might cost more than if it were booked with a special rate, use as AAA or senior.

But there's a big advantage in knowing you'll be in the same room each night, instead of possibly having to move from one room to another. Also, the hotel will consider the entire two-night reservation for upgrade purposes.
