I like the look of rolling duffels but find they can be awkward to pack and unpack - things hiding in the corners that you can't see. If you're going someplace for the long-term, and essentially just hauling things from one location to another and unloading everything at once they're fine. For the type of travel you're describing, I prefer a soft-sided suitcase where I can flip up the lid and see everything I have at more-or-less one glance. A suitcase also lends itself better to playing Tetris with packing cubes.
