Despite all the PR spin in that article the Dreamliners really are a major nightmare for Air NZ. Even ignoring all the engine issues (which aren't a Dreamliner problem as such) they've been forced to swap the next two arrivals to 789's rather than the expected 78K IGW variant, and there are plenty of warning signs that the additional arrivals from 2026 onwards may not be 78K IGW variants either due to the ongoing issues at Boeing.
I love flying on the Dreamliner as a plane, but the reality is NZ have always delivered a flawed BP product from day one with the seats. PE on the v1 has however been the sweet spot of their entire longhaul fleet.
Air NZ are going to have to decide very shortly what they are going to replace the 777's with, and more 787's surely can't be the answer. With the resurrection of the 777-8 project last year (it looked like this variant might never happen) this could be the perfect aircraft for Air NZ, but who in their right mind would want to commit to something with zero idea of when it will ever actually fly?
