Got it. Basically its the crux of my question. If I initiated the upgrade in January, I wouldn't be able to, or if i asked at the airport to be put on list, it would be denied based on the PY low fare.
But since I am initiating the upgrade now while I have status, it goes through and will likely flow through to the gate and be bound by normal gate lotto rules.
And there is no downside to putting in the request, and hopefully enjoy one last upgrade. (however unlikely that will probably be)
