Executive summary: This hotel has no business being part of the Hyatt brand.
15k points per night is too expensive by about 3x.
Spent 4 nights at Dreams Vallarta Bay and had to extend the trip for a day due to air travel limitations; decided to check out another Hyatt AI. Waffled between Dreams on the other side of the bay and Sunscape, We have a kiddo and the water park looked appealing for him. The reviews for this hotel on TA must be mostly bought. Even the review above (dated 2/20) on this thread is waaay too rosy. If Dreams Vallarta is a 4 star hotel (it's not) then Sunscape would be half a star at best. Somewhere between a roadside motel and a La Quinta.
We arrived at noon - no check in until 3pm unless you pay a ransom of $75. Ok whatever. Food? No, only thing open at noon is a food truck that serves burger/fries/nachos/hotdog. And lower quality than what you'd get at a kids ball game. At 1:30 the buffet opened. First thing we are greeted with is a dish in the kids area covered in bugs. I'll come back and post a photo.
Everything at this hotel is 15 years past needing a reno, with major and minor damage evident everywhere. There are large holes in the hallways walls, tiles missing, lights and fans broken.
Redeeming qualities: the room we had on the 5th floor (Hyatt floor?) was clean although many things in the room were damaged or in disrepair. The sun club on the 5th floor has a kids area, snacks and bar and good service. The staff throughout the property were wonderful, warm, and kind. There was a gentleman in the lobby who went out of his way to direct us to the best areas and features of the hotel. Fusion buffet for dinner (beachside buffet) was a very positive experience. I assume the owners simply don't wish to put money into it, likely planning to demo the building if revenue ever drops and build new.
I could write a book about the issues, and I'm only there 1 night. Leaving for the airport as early as I can. I can only imagine Hyatt was forced to allow this property to use the Hyatt name as part of the merger with Apple Leisure in 2021 and has been contractually bound to allow this property to use the Hyatt name for some amount of time.
