Yes, I've seen people with an extra child turned away. It does seem to depend who is on the entry, and how busy they are.

If there is not a big advantage to booking the paid lounge early, I'd try BA and see how you go.

Remember there is a lounge at each end of gate A, so you can try twice (though a 5 minute walk), if the first turns you down. Also I think a Gate B lounge.

Or take two children in with your wife, leave a few minutes later and bring the other child in, if old enough to be unsupervised for a while. Its a busy place, with no exit scan, so you can always say that your wife and children have left to shop.
