Also for completeness, when going out, I used a Osprey Europe Unisex Daylite Waist belt. This was a lifesaver as it was so much more comfortable for long periods than a backpack and forced me to be light. The only things I had in it was my portable battery, iphone cable, cash/coins and a phrasebook.
