I think you should be fine re size. I can't recall the last time I saw Vueling gate agents checking carryon sizes. And I've always been fine with a carry-on that is surely larger than the allowed dimensions. (but one person's handful of data points never should be taken as the rule)
But when you have the bad luck to bump into a grumpy gate agent, they won't gate check your bag, but will send you back to the check-in desk. Obviously since boarding is already well underway, you don't have time and you miss your flight.
It's a tiny risk IMO, but the only way to avoid that risk is to simply check in your luggage upon arrival to the airport.
