That said, I always book one-ways for the flexibility. Now that AA does not allow any changes on AA-only awards you severely limit your options by booking roundtrip, you cannot change just the outbound or return, you have to cancel everything and start over.
The savings can be more than "slight". I've seen more and more instances of it recently (especially for international), and booking two one-ways has priced out up to 40-50% more than the same flights combined into a round trip award.
