There was a post previously about purchasing two one-way tickets, not one round-trip ticket. This was a revenue ticket. On the return flight, there was a flight cancellation forcing an overnight stay. The airline said the person was in “the home city” so no overnight hotel was provided. The person had a driver's license showing the home address, but no dice. The same may happen on award tickets also.
This is an interesting point. One can mitigate against this risk by booking with a credit card that has trip delay insurance.
