Correct. You would get the cash paid back, but not the certificate.

On certain routes within the companion certificate scope (JFK-LAX or ATL-HNL for example), Delta markets the forward cabin as "Delta One". This includes lie-flat seats and lounge access.

Z or I fares are frequently available on the day of departure, too. For example, I have a trip this weekend and the significant majority of the flights both ways are available in I or lower.
