Final update: gate agent printed a boarding pass, but not for segment 2 of the direct flight. That boarding pass was for the return flight the next day (just one segment!). He rang the help desk for additional assistance but to no avail.
Same gate agent boarded me on the computer w/o a boarding pass. Another gate agent tried to stop me from boarding...the gate agent with the earlier assistance intervened.
Did the agent use the sequence number?
