This seems a new DP and a good one too because you receive the balance in trip credit with a new 12 months life.
My husband had a Trip Credit that he used to book a flight with a $11 CC payment but 1) the flight schedule changed to make arrival 2 hours later, 2) the need to make the flight no longer existed, so I canceled it online but to my surprise, it resulted a Flight Credit without Credit Number nor $ value back to his account, only the issued date which was the same as the ticketing date of June 1st (Trip Credit expired on June 19th).
Neither the email nor the information in his AA account contains Credit Number / Value, except the issued date. I suspect in that case AA online would not be able to use the credit anyway since no number associated with it.
Calling AA the AAgent first said it should be a Trip Credit instead of a Flight Credit. After she conferred with help desk, she was told Cancelled flight booked with Trip Credit would result in a Flight Credit - that wasn't the case on May 31st in same scenario, except the value of the ticket was the exact value of the Trip Credit used. On that scenario, it resulted to a brand new Trip Credit.
AAgent said when using it just used the ticket number but I suspected the system would tell me to call reservation instead.
In any case someone posted here that one could ask Refund Dept to change a Flight Credit to Trip Credit and sometimes they would do it. So I went to Refund screen, which said both segment were eligible for refund. I then submitted a refund request based on flight schedule change to ask a issuance of Trip Credit vs the Flight Credit without details currently issued.
Now when clicked on the View Details of the Flight Credit Box in his account - it showed You have successfully submitted a Refund Request. It will take 7 business days to receive a reply. Will update here when I receive the outcome.
A final resort is to contact Customer Relationships using the contact form on AA website. It could take back and forth a few times but once they replied with a email, you can then communicating with that email address. Eventually someone might call you to find out more information, then may be able to resolve the issue. I have had one success thru this method to fix something the AAgent at Ft. Lauderdale ticketing office screwed up.
